The therapeutic relationship, and the effects of therapy as a whole, are largely based on trust, transparency, openness, and respect; it is natural that therapy will broach uncomfortable topics, explore painful memories and emotions, and examine adverse experiences. While this can be quite challenging it is important to recognize that this is a necessary part of therapy and is, in fact where therapeutic effect comes from.
